To ensure reliable performance, selection must follow these fundamental engineering criteria:

  1. Structure and Material: Choosing the right valve body design and metallurgy based on specific process conditions, including fluid temperature, pressure ratings, and chemical corrosion.

  2. Flow Characteristics: Aligning the valve’s inherent flow characteristic (e.g., linear, equal percentage, or quick-opening) with the dynamic requirements of the process loop.

  5. Actuator Rationalization: Ensuring the actuator provides sufficient response speed and thrust/torque to manage the physical load of the process.

Critical Engineering Requirement: Overcoming High Differential Pressure

A frequent oversight in valve engineering occurs with pressure control valves and vent valves. During the selection phase, engineers must account for the maximum possible differential pressure  during abnormal or upset conditions.

 

If the actuator is under-sized and lacks the force to overcome high pressure drops, the valve risks becoming "stuck"—either unable to open or unable to close. This failure can result in significant safety hazards, equipment damage, and costly process downtime.
