Control valves
For control valves, the operating medium is still mainly pneumatic, but the positioning intelligence has moved to a digital interface. This means that with enhanced control, there also is an opportunity to gather a significant amount of diagnostic data on the control valve assembly itself.
For example, information can be collected on the thrust or torque demand of the control valve. This information can be used to monitor the functionality of the valve and predict when maintenance needs to be performed. While such asset-management systems have been developed for pneumatic actuators, they just as easily can be applied to electric actuators. In fact, diagnostics and data loggers have long been a feature of isolating electric actuators. So it's an easy step to apply them to an electric control-valve actuator.
